L-Arginine is the precursor for nitric oxide (NO). NO is regarded as a very important signalling molecule in human biochemistry, amongst others being involved in blood pressure regulation and is also known as Endothelium-derived relaxing factor. NO is derived from L-Arginine by various nitric oxide synthase enzymes. NO relaxes smooth muscle tissue around the endothelium, resulting in vasodilation and increased blood flow.
